Palo Alto was founded in 1894 by Leland Stanford Jr., son of railroad tycoon Leland Stanford Sr. The Stanfords wanted to create a college town adjacent to their new university, and Palo Alto was the perfect location.

The city’s name comes from a tall coastal redwood tree called El Palo Alto, found along San Francisquito Creek, a settlement spot of early Spanish explorers.

The city is also conveniently located near several airports including the San Jose International Airport, San Francisco International Airport, and the Palo Alto Airport.
